Niamh Uí Bhriain takes Sinn Féin to task in Wall St Journal

The Wall Street Journal published a comment piece by Niamh Uí Bhriain this week taking both Sinn Féin and the British government to task for working to impose abortion on the north of Ireland. Unless the Assembly reconvenes by October 21st, abortion legislation passed by Westminster will become law - a return to direct rule by Britain which was supported by Sinn Féin.

From the Wall Street Journal piece:

"The return to direct rule by Westminster was backed to the hilt by Sinn Féin, whose raison d’être is to bring about an independent and united Ireland free of British control. Their decision to go cap in hand to the British Parliament to seek direct rule on abortion has upended centuries of republican tradition.

But this betrayal of republican principles may come at a price. Peadar Tóibín, who founded a new political party, Aontú, after being forced out of Sinn Féin for his pro-life stance, believes Sinn Féin’s progressive drift has contributed to a recent collapse in support both north and south of the border."

She also concludes:

"Yet unless the Assembly at Stormont sits by Oct. 21, July’s vote will stand and it will become legal to obtain an abortion in Northern Ireland. The DUP has said it is willing to reconvene. Sinn Féin is likely to stall, hoping that Parliament’s bid to force change on the north can succeed.

Perhaps Mr. Johnson is busy worrying about other things, but while he and his ruling Conservative Party supposedly champion self-determination in pursuit of Brexit, the U.K. is set to foist an unwanted, undemocratic abortion regime on Northern Ireland. So much for respecting the will of the people".
