This week, Gript media broke the shocking story that showed that women’s lives are being put in danger by the wilful determination not to provide ultrasounds when women seek abortion.
A woman was brought to Limerick Maternity Hospital by ambulance - bleeding, in severe pain, and in danger of losing her life - all because the abortion system fails to ensure an ultrasound before prescribing the abortion pill.
Most people likely don't know that an ultrasound is not provided before abortion pills are given, even though doctors previously warned that it's medically necessary because it's so important to check if the woman has an ectopic pregnancy.
An ectopic pregnancy is when the baby lodges in the fallopian tube - not the womb. If it's missed and the tube bursts, it can be deadly, and undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy is a leading cause of maternal death.
The problem is that the expected symptoms of taking the abortion pills - pain and bleeding - can be confused with the symptoms of ectopic pregnancy.
So the current policy - failing to provide an ultrasound before giving abortion pills - is extremely dangerous. The doctors who wrote up the Limerick case in a medical journal said that the practice of not offering ultrasounds before prescribing abortion pills could lead to women dying.
They were very clear about that. The government has to listen or women will die.
But what people also likely don't know is that the government was warned this would happen. Pro-life doctors urged that the abortion legislation be amended to ensure an ultrasound took place - precisely because they knew it was inevitable these cases would arise and women might die or have their lives endangered.
In fact, Carol Nolan TD even proposed an amendment to the law in the Dáil in December 2018 - and it was met with hostility and outright viciousness in the chamber. Simon Harris refused her proposal saying it would be “a terrible use of what people rightly point out is a scarce resource in the health service”.
The government and abortion campaigners didn't want an ultrasound to take place because they thought it might show the humanity of the baby. But this case shows the abortion system we now have is putting women's lives in danger. We know a woman almost died in Limerick hospital.
Now the media are engaged in an attempted cover-up of this shocking story. We won't let that happen. The media landscape has changed since the bullying of 2018. The truth will not be concealed.
Today we spoke to Niamh Uí Bhriain about the importance of having an ultrasound before considering an abortion also how a woman's life that was endangered due to the failure to provide ultrasounds before prescribing abortion pills.
