Here's a fact:

For everyone of us life began at conception. Most of what makes you unique was decided at that first minute when 50,000 genes from each of your parents laid down your sex, height, eye-colour, skin, and a whole lot else besides.

That's how our lives started. After that we just continued to grow and develop.

So, you, me everybody: we're all just grown-up embryos, That's an amazing fact that can get lost in the debate when big business is pushing for the right to experiment on human embryos or vested interests want to deliberately destroy them. Using human life for lethal research is wrong. But now Mary Harney says she is bringing forward legislation on the human embryo - and she has indicated that she wants to allow embryonic stem cell research to take place in Ireland.

The You. Me. Everybody. project is just one part of a major nationwide campaign by Youth Defence which aims to ensure that any legislation brought forward by Mary Harney protects life from conception and bans lethal research on human embryos.

Did you know?

  • Using human embryos in stem cell research always destroys the life of that embryo
  • Stem cell research is enormously important and has huge potential. But it is ADULTstem cell research, which uses the patient's own stem cells, which is providing medical treatments for seriously ill people.
  • In fact, about 50,000 patients are now benefitting from adult stem cell therapies. Right now, up to 73 medical conditions, including breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries and many others, are being successfully treated by therapies that use the patient's own stem cells.*
  • For embryonic stem cell research therapies that number is ZERO. Destroying embryos in research is unethical and has delivered nothing
  • Adult stem cell research is where the future lies. It's providing hope, not hype. We should support stem cell research that we can all can live with.
