On 19th April, 2012, Professor Tom Mortier was informed that his 64 year old mother had been euthanised the previous day at the Hospital of the Free University of Brussels. She did not suffer from an incurable disease, but suffered with chronic depression. Prof Mortier's mother had broken contact with him 2 years before, and so neither he nor his family had any prior knowledge of the euthanasia. They have been deeply affected by his mothers death and the circumstances surrounding it.

Lionel Roosemont and his family live in Belgium with their 20-year-old daughter Tikvah. She has a significant brain condition she’s had from birth. They say that when they are out with their daughter, people who they do not know approach them and ask them “why they don’t euthanise that child.” Tikvah is a joy to her family and is deserving of her life regardless what anyone else thinks. Lionel says that euthanasia is like a thick black blanket that has descended on Belgium and that its getting worse.
