There are two elections taking place on the same day on Friday, 7th June 2024. Polling stations are open from 7 a.m.–10 p.m. If you are over 18 years and your name is included in the electoral register you are entitled to vote in the local area in which you live. You can check online at checktheregister.ie.
Ireland is entitled to 14 MEPs in the Tenth European Parliament. They are to be elected on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV) in three constituencies:
There are 31 Local Government Authorities in Ireland
In total there are 137 electoral areas in Ireland and each of them elects a number of Councillors. The number of County and City Councillors to be elected is 949. They make policy decisions at local level.
It is not necessary to be an Irish citizen to vote in a Local Election.
There are 73 candidates in total standing for the European Elections; 23 candidates running in both the constituencies of Ireland South and Dublin, while 27 candidates are contesting the Midlands North West constituency.
There are over 1800 candidates standing for the local elections in 31 local government authorities.
