300,000 Pro-Life Petitions Delivered to Stormont

This week in Belfast, members of Precious Life brought 300,000 pro-life petitions to Stormont from citizens demanding that politicians preserve Northern Ireland’s pro-life laws and keep women and babies safe.

With just 1.2 million registered voters in the North, the number of petitions gathered by the pro-life group is particularly impressive.

At Stormont, Precious Life challenged the media to report the obvious support for the pro-life position in the same way that they covered the abortion activism of Amnesty International.

Amnesty previously presented 45,000 petitions gathered online to the Assembly to much media fanfare. Bernadette Smyth, director of Precious Life, pointed out that “It is important to bear in mind that a person ‘signing’ Amnesty’s online petition is only asked to provide his or her name and email. Anyone from anywhere in the world can put their name to this petition. Clare Bailey MLA presented 45,000 petitions this morning, but how many of these petitions were actually signed by Northern Ireland citizens?”

"Everyone of our 300,000 petitions has been signed by the people of Northern Ireland," she said. "It's clear that pro-life voters are exercised on this issue".

A number of MLA’s came out to show their support to those who had signed the pro-life petition.

“These signed petition postcards and petition sheets were delivered on behalf of the thousands and thousands of people in Northern Ireland who took the time to put pen to paper to defend life. With real names, real addresses and real signatures, these petitions are real proof of the united and unyielding conviction of the pro-life majority in Northern Ireland that every human being, born or unborn, has an unconditional right to life,” stated Smyth.
