Roscommon for Life hold pro-life vigil near GP that provides abortions

Roscommon for Life held a pro-life vigil this weekend, near a GP that provides chemical abortions, specifically drawing attention to the push from the government to expand the provision of abortion, despite Ireland seeing an increase in abortion figures.

“Abortion providing doctors are rewarded handsomely - €450 for each abortion, funded by Irish taxpayers,” they said.

An photo showed attendees holding a range of posters provided from Life Institute used as part of a campaign against the unjust exclusion zones, with one saying “The Womb Should Be A Safe Zone”.

Others were holding posters from the Rally for Life in 2024 that highlighted the horrifying abortion figures that were over 42,000 at the time. Recent figures from the HSE has now revealed that those figures have now increased to over 50,000 babies tragically lost to abortion.

In their post, Roscommon for Life also drew attention to the push for more access to abortion from the previous Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly, who had said that ensuring that abortions are provided in all hospitals across the country was a “main priority” as several hospitals were at the time still not providing abortions.

“Also it is important to note that just over one year ago 12 out of the 19 maternity hospitals and units across the country did not offer surgical abortions,” they said.

“But the then Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, decided that abortion was a top priority. So a major recruitment drive by the HSE and the State sought to hire doctors and nurses who were willing to do abortions thus ensuring that all 19 maternity hospitals were equipped to abort babies,” they continued.

“It is highly unlikely that Stephen Donnelly then ‘Minister for Health’ did this without the full backing of the then government parties Fianna Fail Fine Gael and the Greens.”

On a Facebook post the pro-life group said they held their vigil outside the 100 metres exclusion zone of the Kelly-Henry GP practice, as the practice is known to facilitate chemical abortions. The 100-metre distance is to comply with Ireland’s exclusion zones law that prohibits any pro-life activity, prayer or conversation that may lead a woman to change her mind on abortion, if done within proximity of an abortion clinic.

Last December, Life Institute reported on Cavan pro-life who were actively campaigning to prevent abortions from being provided in their county hospital.

“Cavan hospital workers who do not wish to support the provision of abortion services in their work place in 2025 have a legal right to adhere to their conscience and not be involved in the murder of the innocent (57,000 to date on the island of Ireland),” said Liam de Paor, one of the groups activists.

Unfortunately, abortions are now available in Cavan General Hospital, where the pro-life group said they were “appalled” and appealed to “hospital workers to boycott any abortion support services,” in a bid to prevent consultants from carrying out an abortion, whilst also reminding workers of their right to refuse participation in an abortion.

Sandra Parda of the Life Institute commented, saying: “Bravo to the pro-lifers in Roscommon that are bravely standing up for the protection of life in the womb! Over 50,000 babies have been lost to abortion in Ireland and this is an absolute tragedy. This figure will only increase with wider abortion access across the country.”

“We urge all pro-lifers to continue to hold public vigils and to keep standing up for life. It is needed now more than ever as the lives of thousands of innocent little babies are now being put at risk every single day. Any witness, no matter how big or small, can have a big impact in the pro-life movement, which can result in a life being saved.”
