Peadar Tóibín’s new party has 100% pro-life policy

Peadar Tóibín’s new party, Aontú, has a 100% pro-life policy and opposes abortion in all circumstances. 

The party’s stance on protecting life in all its stages is one of three core policy pillars, and all representatives are required to oppose the 2018 abortion legislation. Deputy Tóibín said this week that that Aontú TDs would continue to seek humane, life-saving amendments to the legislation passed by the Dáil before Christmas.

Aontú is a 32-county political party and its northern representatives are also required to oppose any changes to the law in that jurisdiction.  The party is also calling for better supports for women with unexpected pregnancies, and for emphasis on perinatal hospice care rather than abortion. 

Peadar Tóibín TD has signed up more 1,500 members at this stage of an extensive nationwide tour for Aontú. Almost a third of those new members are estimated to have come from Fianna Fáil, although the majority of members say they are looking for an alternative to the groupthink prevailing in the Dáil on almost every issue.

Deputy Tóibín, who has been a TD for Meath West since 2011, left Sinn Féin in November of last year after being suspended when he voted against legislation introducing abortion on demand. He has held more than 30 meetings across the country, attracting significant crowds, with more than 350 attending in Cork, and similar numbers turning out from Donegal to Limerick. Pro-life voters who feel alienated by the capitulation of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáíl TDs to the demands of abortion campaigners have attended the meetings in large numbers.
