A pro-life group in Cavan have been campaigning to prevent the provision of abortion services in Cavan General Hospital to keep the hospital a “sanctuary” for the unborn.
Pro-life group Chose Life Cavan have been campaigning to prevent abortion from being provided in Cavan General Hospital, specifically expressing that hospital workers in the county’s hospital did not want to provide the services and had a legal right to object on the basis of their conscience.
“We are currently campaigning to keep Cavan General Hospital as a sanctuary for the life of the unborn,” said one of the groups activists, Liam de Paor
“Cavan hospital workers who do not wish to support the provision of abortion services in their work place in 2025 have a legal right to adhere to their conscience and not be involved in the murder of the innocent (57,000 to date on the island of Ireland),” he continued.
The group further plans a public meeting in early January to support the workers in the hospital, where all local pro-life politicians will be invited to attend.
According to the HSE website, currently 17 out of Ireland’s 19 hospitals are providing abortion services, not including Cavan General Hospital. In December of 2023, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly announced plans to expand abortion services to several hospitals, including Cavan General Hospital, which he said was his “main priority”.
In response to Minster Donnelly’s announcement, Choose Life Cavan held a prayer protest outside the hospital entrance to protest to show their opposition to these plans. Another prayer meeting was organised this past Sunday and was well attended by locals, staff from the hospital, as well as people from Longford, Leitrim and Monaghan, and members from pro-life party Aontú.
Sandra Parda of the Life Institute commented saying: “Bravo to Choose Life Cavan for their continued protest against abortion services in their local hospital. The hospital staff oppose providing abortions because they can see that it really kills an innocent little baby. It is work like this that saves lives and bears witness to the importance of life in the womb, whilst showing us the good that comes from doing pro-life work within our communities .”
