PR: Kenny fears backlash

Enda Kenny's spin on abortion shows Fine Gael fear public backlash

The Life Institute has said that claims of harassment by an Taoiseach Enda Kenny are a "lame attempt to deflect from the grim reality of the abortion Bill, which allows abortion until birth".

Spokeswoman Niamh Uí Bhriain said that Fine Gael TDs were rushing out to make all kinds of wild claims because they knew a huge public backlash was looming over the detail of the proposed legislation to allow abortion.

"This proposal had been criticised by leading doctors, by our most senior Obstetricians, by our top expert on suicidality; and yet an Taoiseach insists on pressing ahead with a measure to legalise abortion without term limits," said Ms Uí Bhriain.

She said that the public were becoming increasingly aware of what the proposal actually entailed and that Mr Kenny and others were making "wild claims" of harassment to deflect from that reality.

"It won't work," she added. "We're rolling out a massive awareness campaign to ensure the reality of this Bill is made clear to the public and Mr Kenny's deflection tactics won't stop the public from being horrified by this barbaric proposal."
