A grandmother declared that “ a baby is always a blessing” in response to the surprise birth of her 16-year-old daughter’s baby boy during Thanksgiving.
Peyton Peoples was 16 years old this Thanksgiving when she unexpectedly went into labour, although she did not know that she was pregnant. Her mother Kira was at another family member's home at the time, thus leaving the teenager home alone.
"I was laying in bed and my water broke, so I went into the bathroom and had Paxton," Peyton told Fox 2. "I cleaned him off and then looked up on TikTok how to cut my umbilical cord. I cut the cord and then wiped him off again."
Peyton had lost her father seven months before, who was shot and killed during a robbery, leaving Kira a single mother of four children. After the birth of her baby, Peyton was afraid of the pressure it would put on her mother, so she claimed that the baby was left outside their front porch.
"It's hard. It was already hard for her to raise us, and that just added another burden on her back, and I didn't want to do that," Peyton said.
"Why my porch? That's what I kept asking, why my porch," Kira said.
Believing her daughter's story, Kira shared about it on social media and called 911 to alert the Detroit police about the abandoned baby. The police took Peyton to the Children’s Hospital to rule out the possibility of her being the mother, which was when she revealed she was in fact the mother.
Kira’s response to the birth of her grandson, was to say that "the baby is always a blessing” adding that “it was just that my baby went through this by herself".
"We're going to figure it out. I'm going to keep going to work," Kira continued. "[Peyton]'s going back to school. I'm going to work midnights, and she's going to go to school during the day, and we'll switch off."
A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family throughout this time, which has now raised over $40,000.
"We are now both single moms trying to navigate a very unexpected and emotional time but we are struggling with the sudden financial and personal challenges that come with this situation," Kira wrote. "Thank you for reading, for understanding, and for helping us in this incredibly difficult moment. Your kindness truly makes a difference."
Sandra Parda of the Life Institute commented, saying: “What beautiful words from a grandmother about her daughter and grandson. Children are absolutely a blessing!”
“Heartwarming stories like this just show how important supporting a woman and family during an unplanned pregnancy is and how much joy a child really brings to a family, whether they are planned or unplanned.”
