Abortion clinics treated with more respect and protection than Mass in the UK

Last weekend, March for Life UK held their annual pro-life march in London on Saturday September 5th. An estimated 10,000 pro-life supporters turned up for the event, marching from the Emmanuel Centre all the way to Parliament Square. 

Before the event, Holy Mass was celebrated at Westminster Cathedral. Fifteen bishops, as well as March for Life attendees and supporters, gathered to worship God and pray for a successful day, as well as for an end to abortion in the UK - with the latest annual report from the UK showing over a quarter of a million unborn babies killed via abortion in one year alone.

It was known beforehand that counter protests organised by pro-abortion individuals and advocates were to take place during the march itself. But, shockingly, this did not stop there: abortion advocates disrupted Holy Mass, shouting pro-abortion slogans inside Westminster Cathedral.

Pro-aborts were seen storming inside the church, holding a banner with the ridiculous phrase “PRO-LIFE THAT’S A LIE, YOU DON’T CARE IF PEOPLE DIE” scrawled across, while shouting the same. 

The organist present worked hard to drown out the commotion, with the protestors being escorted before mass could resume. 

Glaring hypocrisy

Taking the abhorrent disrespect aside, one cannot help but point out the glaring hypocrisy and two-tier system operating within the UK at the moment.

To my knowledge, there was no follow up or caution from police to the protestors for the disgusting and outrageously disrespectful display. 

I understand that this may sound like an over-the-top expectation to some. “What have the police got to do with this?”, one might posit. To these I would start with asking: what do you believe the intention of the protestors was? What could one safely assume, based on the nature of the protest? 

To intimidate the faithful at mass.

You’d have to be either completely dishonest or a moron to deny that. This is the obvious take away from the situation.

The reason this particularly stings, is because in the UK you can and likely will be arrested for praying silently on your own outside an abortion clinic. The reason? Your silent prayer is causing “harassment or distress” to those seeking to have their unborn children killed, or to those inside the clinic working to kill unborn children. Or, God forbid, you might influence a woman to keep her baby. How this is possible when silent prayer is inaudible and the faithful individual is standing still with their head down is hard to understand. It would almost seem as if abortion advocates and legislators had a moving belief in the power of prayer(!)

Therefore, the issue is this: why is causing harassment and intimidation to a group of people exercising their rights (to worship and practice their religion in peace) punishable in one context, but not another? Why are women seeking to have abortions, and those carrying them out, deserving of more ‘protection’? 

It’s because the issue was never about freedom or protecting individual rights. This has been comprehensively proven after the shameful display on Saturday, September 5th. 

Whether it’s disrupting Mass for the sake of hysterically shouting some half-baked (and painfully ironic) slogan about people who are against the killing of human beings in the womb, or harassing pro-lifers at an otherwise peaceful march, it’s obvious that if you are pro-life, you are deemed less-than.

And it’s not just the UK, of course. Whether it’s Belfast City councillors voting to light up City Hall for ‘International Safe Abortion Day’, or the proposed criminalisation of pro-life expression in Northern Ireland to the extent of having to put anti-abortion leaflets in envelopes marked with ridiculous ‘WARNING’ labels at the behest of Belfast City Council, or the very existence of ‘protection zones’ around abortion clinics and hospitals carrying about abortions in the UK (and Ireland, North and South, for that matter), the message is clear: Abortions and access to them is paramount. Causing people to think twice about unborn children being killed in the womb, to the extent of 73,000,000 a year globally, is verboten.
